The Almost Happy company was created by Brian Kaplan, MD. and Hephzibah Kaplan, an artist and art therapist.
Their book, Almost Happy: Pushing your Buttons with Reverse Psychology (to be published by Loba on 31 August 2021)
includes 114 originally-designed buttons that were developed over 20 years’ clinical practice and running workshops
for the general public and health professionals.
The aim of the buttons is to get people to laugh at aspects of ourselves that may be preventing us
from being really happy. As Dr. Kaplan says, ‘When we laugh we relax our muscles, enhance our
breathing and raise our ‘feel-good’ chemicals known as endorphins and encephalins. This can be an
ideal psycho-physiological state in which to face some of our issues’.
We are all capable of slipping into behaviors that do not serve us well (for example: being always
judgmental, or often grumpy or too bossy). The Almost Happy approach uses humor to reveal and
provoke the parts of our personality that dominate other parts of our personality for the worst. When
you are provoked to see the funny side of how you may be sabotaging your life, you may be more
inclined to lessen the disruptive behavior and enjoy life a little more.
The Almost Happy products aim to raise awareness, aid communication and make people laugh.
Each button will speak to an individual depending on their particular quirks or issues. They can be
used for fun and self-help. The badges can be worn at home with friends to elicit interesting
conversations. They can also be worn at parties to break the ice or even in public to bring about
So how about it? Do you have a sense of humor about yourself and believe it can be used to galvanise change?
Are you ready to be challenged? Ah, no, perhaps you are not yet quite ready – come back another day!
